About Mark Brandon MBE

Mark Brandon
Innovative Teacher badge

I am an academic at the Open University who lives in North London. In my day job I research in the area of polar oceanography, and teach in environmental sciences. My work web page has a bit about what I am up to. And this is me on LinkedIn.

If you want to see my research publications and "metrics" you can find me on google scholar or ResearcherID, but I am not sure I hold with judging researchers on metrics. For example David Colquhoun provides a rather brilliant discussion about that.

Like virtually all university academics I do teaching as well as research. I strongly believe that good researchers can be good teachers, and of course vice versa. I have won 5 NTF/Open University teaching awards (2004, 2009, 2012, 2017 and 2020).

In 2012 I was awarded the Times Higher Education Most Innovative Teacher of the year. If you want to know what I did you can see my blog entry Strange things happen, here or my work web page.

In December 2020 I was proud to be honoured with the award of an MBE for Services to polar science based on my activities at The Open University.

I am on twitter as @icey_mark, and on Flickr as m.a.brandon.
